Bayden Solomon
Kaiwhakairo Kōhatu of Ōraka Aparima/Kāi Tahu/Kāti Māmoe/Waitaha/Te Arawa
Bayden Solomon is an artist working with pounamu and stone, raised in Murihiku and now based in Tāhuna. His creative journey began at Tai Poutini Polytechnic on the West Coast, where his connection to traditional Māori stonework deepened. He is influenced by the Takapū tutors and carvers from Te Puia, drawing on their knowledge of tikanga and traditional carving practices. Bayden also finds inspiration in the strength of whānau and community, where the sharing of ancestral stories and whakapapa guides and informs his work.
Bayden’s work is strongly connected to traditional Māori design, with a focus on pūrākau, whakapapa, and personal connection. His process is thoughtful and responsive—he listens closely to the kaupapa or the person behind the piece, dedicated to research, and ensures each carving reflects something meaningful. Bayden approaches his carving with quiet dedication and respect for tikanga, crafting pieces that carry meaning and integrity.
Bayden has exhibited his work at the Left Bank Art Gallery in Greymouth and has collaborated with his brother, Tawhiri “Chip” Solomon, on commissioned pieces sent overseas. Whether working solo or alongside others, he brings a steady focus and clear intention to every piece.
Outside the workshop, he enjoys spending time with friends and whānau—out on adventures, recharging, and keeping things in perspective. That balance shows in his work, which carries more than visual appeal. Each piece reflects purpose, connection, and the quiet confidence Bayden brings to his practice.
