Lealasa Mapuilesua (Sa) is a NZ-born Samoan artist, proud of her heritage—her dad is from Salelologa, Lefaga, and Malaemalu, Falealili, and her mum from Faleapuna, Falefa, and Solosolo. Now in Invercargill, she brings to life Samoan and cultural arts through vibrant lei, textiles, elei, woodcarving, and painting.

Her creative journey started simply, at home, making lei and other cultural pieces for family functions. In Southland, these traditional items were not always easy to find, so she took it upon herself to create them, using what was available and sharing her work with the community. It began as a way to serve others, and along the way, she discovered a true joy in creating, connecting with her beliefs, and honoring her culture.

Mostly self-taught, with gentle guidance from sisters in her Ministry, Lealasa treasures her creativity as a gift from God. She values not only making beautiful items but also inspiring others to learn and continue cultural practices. Over the years, she has guided her community in crafting their own pieces, leaving a quiet legacy—each lei, stitch, or carved item carrying intention, warmth, and significance—ensuring that family traditions, faith, and cultural knowledge continue to be shared with future generations.
